Which one to head for
Whichever is closest. All three keep the same hours and carry the same equipment, so the only
thing worth weighing is how long the road will take at that time of day. From the west-coast beaches
after dark that is usually a short run; the hill out of Patong in afternoon rain is not.
If somebody is coming to you instead
An address somebody can actually find is worth more than any other detail you can give. The
resorts along this coast are vast, several of them share a single access road, and villa
developments frequently have three gates of which only one is staffed once it gets dark.
- Which hotel or villa, and the room or unit number
- Which entrance is open at this hour, if there is a choice
- A mobile that will be answered when it rings
- Whether reception knows a doctor is on the way
Putting one person at the gate to wave the car in saves more time than everything else combined,
and it matters most in the middle of the night when the main entrance may be the only one
unlocked — see doctor hotel visits.
No hour is a bad one
An enormous share of this work falls between midnight and four in the morning: feverish
children, a stomach that has finally beaten somebody, cuts that want closing, and people their
friends have quietly become worried about. Not one of those is improved by waiting for
breakfast.
Undecided about whether it warrants a visit? Telephone and say what has happened. It costs
nothing and it settles the question more often than it does not.
Useful to have with you
- A passport if one is nearby, though nobody is turned away without it
- Insurance details, mentioned at the beginning of the visit and not the end
- Anything you take daily, in its own box or photographed on a phone
- With a child, their age and roughly what they weigh
- With a fever, the day it began and the highest number anybody has recorded
Paying, and claiming
Card or cash, either is fine. The figure is agreed with you before treatment rather than handed
over at the end, and each visit can generate an itemised receipt together with a written report in
English — the combination most policies want — see
travel insurance claims.
Collect that paperwork before you walk out. Whatever an insurer decides it needs six weeks from
now is invariably the thing that becomes hard to obtain the moment you are on another
continent.
In an emergency
Call 1669 for the national ambulance rather than putting anybody in a car.
That means chest pain, breathlessness at rest, a face or speech gone wrong, blood that will not
stop, a convulsion, anyone recovered from the water, or anyone who cannot be woken. Give the road
and a landmark rather than only a hotel name. See
emergency medical care.
