Grasp it as close to the skin as possible with fine tweezers and pull steadily upward. No twisting, no burning, no petroleum jelly, no nail varnish.
Those methods make the tick regurgitate into the wound, which is the opposite of the point.
Wash the area afterwards and watch it for a couple of weeks. An expanding ring-shaped rash or a fever needs assessing.
Centipedes and the ones that genuinely hurt
Large centipedes are common here, live in bathrooms and gardens, and their bite is properly painful — often described as worse than a wasp sting.
Hot water immersion helps, as does strong analgesia. Swelling and redness around the site is expected and settles over a day or two.
