Health Screening in Phuket

A long stay on an island is a good moment to find out what is going on internally, and it costs a fraction of what the same panel costs at home. Health screening in Phuket is a morning of blood, blood pressure and a proper conversation about the numbers afterwards.

Who tends to do this

Not people who feel ill. People who have not had anything checked in years and now have the time.

  • Expatriates on annual leave with a free morning
  • Long-stay visitors wanting a baseline before a visa or a job
  • Anyone over forty who has been meaning to for a decade
  • Families with a history of diabetes or heart disease
  • People who have made changes and want to see whether they worked

The point is finding what is drifting before it becomes a diagnosis.

What a basic panel actually includes

Full blood count, fasting glucose, a lipid profile, kidney and liver function, and a urine test. Blood pressure, height, weight and waist.

That combination catches most of what is worth catching early: anaemia, a glucose that has begun climbing, cholesterol out of range, a kidney or liver quietly under strain.

It is a couple of tubes and twenty minutes of your time — see blood tests.

The urine test is the one people are inclined to skip and should not. Protein or sugar appearing there is often the earliest hint that something is happening in the kidneys, and it arrives long before anybody feels different.

What gets added, and when it is justified

Thyroid function where there is fatigue, weight change or a family history. HbA1c where glucose is borderline. Prostate testing for men over fifty, after a conversation about what a raised result would actually mean.

Iron studies, vitamin D and B12 where symptoms point that way. Hepatitis B and C where exposure or vaccination status makes it sensible.

Nothing is bundled in because it inflates a package. Every additional test needs a reason you would recognise as one.

Fasting, and doing it properly

Eight to twelve hours with nothing but water. Black coffee counts as breaking it, which surprises people every time.

Take your usual medication unless specifically told otherwise, and bring the boxes so the list is accurate.

Early morning is easiest — you sleep through most of the fast and eat straight afterwards.

One thing worth avoiding: a screening booked the morning after a heavy night out. Alcohol shifts liver enzymes and triglycerides for a day or two afterwards, and a panel taken then describes last night rather than your health. Leave it forty-eight hours and the numbers mean something.

The conversation, which is the useful part

A page of numbers with reference ranges is not a screening. It is data. Somebody sitting down and telling you what it means is the screening.

Which figures are genuinely borderline and which are noise. What a slightly raised liver enzyme does and does not indicate. Which one thing, changed, would move the most numbers.

Results are gone through in person or by phone, in English, at whatever length it takes.

Blood pressure, quietly the most important number

Nothing on the list does more damage over a lifetime, and nothing is more completely silent until it has already done some.

A single high reading proves nothing. Two or three, taken properly on separate occasions, mean something and can be arranged during a stay.

Where it is genuinely raised, treatment starts here and a plan is written for your own doctor to continue.

Screening in your own room

The whole thing travels. Blood taken, blood pressure and measurements done, samples off to the laboratory, results discussed later by phone.

Convenient for couples and families doing it together, and for anyone whose morning is better spent not sitting in a waiting room — see doctor hotel visits.

Bang Tao, Kata and Patong for anybody who would rather come in, at any hour.

When something abnormal turns up

Most abnormal results are mild and mean a repeat test rather than a diagnosis. That gets explained before you have time to catastrophise about it.

Where something needs a specialist — a scan, an endoscopy, a cardiology opinion — the referral is made with the results attached, so nothing is repeated at your expense.

Where it needs a hospital, that is arranged rather than suggested — see hospital transfer.

Certificates, visas and employers

Some visas and some employers require a medical with specific tests and a signed form, and the requirements vary considerably.

Bring the actual form. Guessing at what an authority wants and getting it wrong means paying twice.

Certificates are issued in English with the doctor’s licence number — see medical certificates.

What screening cannot do

A panel of blood tests is a snapshot, not an insurance policy. Normal results in March say nothing about June, and they do not rule out the conditions that no blood test detects.

Nor does it replace the screening programmes run at home — cervical, breast, bowel — which are done on schedules for good reasons and which a holiday panel does not substitute for.

What it does well is catch the slow, silent, entirely treatable drifts: pressure creeping up, glucose edging toward diabetes, a lipid profile heading the wrong way. Those are worth catching, and most people have no idea they are happening.

Cost, timing and paperwork

Priced per panel and per additional test, quoted before anything is drawn. Considerably less than the equivalent in most home countries.

Blood in the morning, results the same day for the standard panel.

Full reports and itemised receipts as standard, which some policies will reimburse — see travel insurance claims.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take?

Twenty minutes for the blood and measurements. Results for a standard panel come back the same day.

Do I have to fast?

Eight to twelve hours for glucose and cholesterol, water only. Black coffee breaks a fast, which catches people out.

What is in a standard panel?

Blood count, glucose, lipids, kidney and liver function, urine, plus blood pressure and measurements.

Will somebody explain the results?

Yes, in person or by phone, in English. A page of numbers on its own is not a screening.

Can it be done at my hotel?

All of it. Blood, blood pressure and measurements at your accommodation, results discussed afterwards by phone.

Should I add extra tests?

Only where there is a reason — symptoms, family history, age, or a borderline earlier result. Nothing is bundled in to pad a package.

What if something comes back abnormal?

Most mild abnormalities mean a repeat rather than a diagnosis. Anything needing a specialist is referred with the results attached.

Can you complete a visa or employer medical form?

Yes, but bring the actual form. Requirements differ and guessing means paying for it twice.

Three clinics, none of which close

English-speaking doctors, on duty 24 hours a day. Phuket is bigger than visitors expect and the traffic is worse than the map suggests, so Takecare Medical Clinic works from three separate buildings rather than one: Bang Tao on the north-west coast, Kata in the south, and Patong between them. Each is open every hour of every day, takes people without an appointment, and asks nothing about residency or referrals.

Beyond the island, Takecare Medical Clinic is one of the Takecare Clinic group‘s clinics working across Phuket, Krabi and Chon Buri. That matters mainly for what happens afterwards: move on mid-treatment and the next clinic already holds the notes, so a handover is a call between colleagues rather than a folder you carry through an airport.

Getting seen, and how to choose a branch

There is somebody on the end of +66 81 718 9080 or WhatsApp 24 hours, every day. Say what has gone wrong and the reply will be honest about which of three things you are dealing with: come in now, this will keep until the morning, or skip us entirely and go where there is a surgeon. No appointment exists to be made, and there is no hour at which asking is a nuisance.

Pick whichever branch is nearest rather than whichever sounds largest — they run the same hours and carry the same equipment. Patong suits the west-coast beaches and Bangla Road, Kata covers Karon and the south, and Bang Tao serves Layan, Surin and Cherngtalay. Cannot get out to a clinic? Ask for a doctor hotel visit instead and somebody comes to your room. And if what you need turns out to be beyond any clinic, referral and hospital transfer is arranged from the same conversation. You are made stable before anybody moves you, a colleague rings ahead so the team on the other end knows what is arriving, and the transport is organised for you rather than handed over as one more thing to sort out.
