What can be tested for
The standard panel covers the infections that actually matter, by blood, urine or swab depending on what is being looked for.

Timing, which decides whether a result means anything
This is the part that goes wrong most often. Every infection has a window period — the gap between exposure and the point at which a test can detect it — and testing inside that window produces a negative that proves nothing.
Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are usually detectable around two weeks. Fourth-generation HIV testing is reliable at six weeks and conclusive by twelve. Syphilis needs about six weeks. Hepatitis C can take longer still.
The dates get worked out with you from the actual date of exposure, and written down, so you know what a result covers and when a repeat is due.
When something has just happened
If the exposure was within the last seventy-two hours and carried a genuine HIV risk, post-exposure prophylaxis is a real option and the clock is the only thing that matters. It works best started within hours, and its usefulness falls away sharply after three days.
Come in or ring immediately rather than waiting for the morning or for symptoms. There is nothing to be gained by waiting and a great deal to lose.
Emergency contraception, where relevant, is also time-dependent and is handled in the same visit.
Symptoms worth testing on
Discharge, burning on passing urine, sores or ulcers, unusual bleeding, pain in the testicles or the pelvis, or a rash on the palms and soles that appeared without explanation.
Several of these have entirely innocent causes — a urinary infection, thrush, friction. Testing separates them rather than leaving you guessing.
Symptoms are treated while results are pending where the picture is clear enough to justify it, rather than making somebody wait three days in discomfort.
Testing with no symptoms at all
Most sexually transmitted infections produce nothing you would notice, particularly chlamydia, which is why screening exists at all.
A negative result after an appropriate interval is genuinely reassuring, and a positive one caught early is straightforward to treat. Both outcomes are better than not knowing.
Nobody needs a reason beyond wanting to know. That is a sufficient reason and it is the only one anybody will ask for.
How the confidentiality actually works
Records stay in the clinic. Nothing is reported to a hotel, an employer, an insurer or a consulate, and no result is discussed with anyone who arrived with you.
You choose how the result reaches you — a call, a message, or coming back in. It is your decision and it is asked before anything is tested.

Partners, and the conversation nobody wants
A treated infection returns immediately if a partner is untreated. That is not a moral point, it is a biological one.

Abstain or use condoms until both courses are finished, which is usually a week — the exact interval is written on your paperwork.
